The Magpies are still looking to strengthen their squad before the window closes at the end of the month
In order to bolster their team and position themselves to challenge for a European championship this year, Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are still active in the transfer market. Due to Manchester United’s FA Cup victory last season, the Toon came dangerously close to missing out on playing in Europe.
The Magpies are continuing in negotiations with Crystal Palace to sign Marc Guehi, and they are optimistic that a deal can be reached. If they cross that boundary, focus should turn to fortifying their right-wing stance.
Although Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have contributed the most goals for Newcastle, the Magpies still need more from the right side of the field. There could be a wildcard option in the team already, though.
After completing a £35 million transfer from Leicester City to St. James’ Park, Harvey Barnes missed a significant portion of the previous campaign. He only made 23 appearances across all competitions, finishing with five goals and three assists.
While it’s true that Gordon is superior to his fellow Englishman on the left side of the pitch, is it really worth it to give Barnes a chance on the right? Naturally, Jacob Murphy has had a fantastic preseason and ought to be let to maintain his strong form.
Having said that, a front three with Isak, Gordon, and Barnes has not yet been revealed. Howe may be able to use it as a wild card, which would change Newcastle’s existing lineup.
The Magpies use inverted wingers while Gordon and Miggy Almiron are playing, but Newcastle has a natural right-footer when Murphy is on the right. Something Barnes would allow Howe to duplicate.
It’s important to note that while cutting in from the left and shooting are two of his strongest traits, crossing is another one that might help him out on the right.
