Newcastle United has rekindled its interest in Burnley’s James Trafford and is moving closer to signing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, as TEAMtalk can disclose.
Earlier this summer, Newcastle expressed interest in England U21 goalkeeper Trafford, and they quickly began negotiations with Burnley over his possible acquisition. Eddie Howe’s team made a £16 million bid for Trafford, but Burnley turned it down because they believe he is worth closer to £30 million.
Though there hasn’t been much buzz about the goalkeeper in recent weeks, insiders have told TEAMtalk that Newcastle is still highly interested in signing him.
Even with the addition of Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy, the Magpies are still considering a move to further reinforce their keeper ranks.
Newcastle will now try to get closer to Burnley’s asking price since they see Trafford as a player who can challenge and cover current No. 1 Nick Pope and eventually become their long-term keeper.
The 21-year-old began Monday’s 4-1 away victory against Luton Town in Burnley’s Championship debut; nevertheless, the Clarets have lined themselves up for his possible departure by signing Vaclav Hladky and Etienne Green this summer.
With Newcastle, the Manchester City academy graduate would have a better chance of catching the attention of the next England manager. Meanwhile, Newcastle is getting closer to signing England defender Guehi from Palace. Earlier on Friday, it was revealed that Newcastle had sent Palace a fourth bid, which puts them much closer to his £65 million price tag. Trafford made the provisional England setup for Euro 2024 but did not make it into the final 26-man squad.
Newcastle transfer news: Trafford eyed after Guehi
Guehi has informed Palace that he wants to go, and sources have revealed to TEAMtalk transfer insider Fraser Gillan that there is going to be a “breakthrough” in the negotiations.
The terms of a possible deal, which could see the center back surpass Alexander Isak and become Newcastle’s record signing, are being discussed by the two clubs.
Should Guehi be confirmed as leaving, then Palace are expected to target Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah as a replacement. It is a frustrating time for Chalobah though as he must wait for Guehi’s move to be finalised before he can start to properly plan for the new season.
