Journalist David Ornstein reports that Newcastle United has begun to look at alternatives for Marc Guehi, the 23-year-old defender for Crystal Palace, since there is still a valuation discrepancy.

The highly sought-after center defender, who is still reportedly valued at over £70 million by chairman and co-owner Steve Parish, is something that the Magpies have been unwilling to give in to thus far.

In reaction to Newcastle’s most recent attempts to entice Guehi to St. James’ Park this summer, Parish stated in the public on Sky Sports, “If you want a superstar player, you’ve got to pay superstar money.”

The club up north has made four attempts at signing the Eagles’ star defender, with the most recent offering valued at £65 million.

Ornstein claims Newcastle has already begun to explore other alternatives, although it is unclear if the Magpies would up their offer again in their pursuit of Guehi.

With Sven Botman and Jaamal Lascelles out due to significant knee injuries, Eddie Howe’s first objective for the last two weeks of the transfer window is still to sign a starting center-back.

Newcastle explore alternatives to the England internationa

Newcastle has added five players in a very quiet transfer window at St. James’ Park: Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, William Osula, Lloyd Kelly, and John Ruddy.

The Magpies spent a lot of June trying to allay fears about Financial Fair Play after selling teenage players Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh for a combined £65 million.

Now that the transfer window is closing, Eddie Howe is pressing for the arrival of a center back. During an interview with The Athletic FC Podcast, Ornstein disclosed that Guehi is one of the names Newcastle is examining.

“Crystal Palace have set their sights higher. There is a sense that maybe Steve Parish and his fellow owners would compromise around the 70 million pound mark. There have been reports that 65 will get it done.

“So clearly, there’s a discrepancy, a gap in valuations that will need to be breached if this deal is going to proceed.

“Now, the conversations continue, but also Newcastle United look at alternative candidates, and they will have their recruitment list.

At least one or two of them will be the subject of an active discussion to determine if they should go on and, if so, which of them to pursue. It’s obvious that the issue is problematic.

There are just three center-back options available for Newcastle versus Southampton in their Premier League opener: Lloyd Kelly, Dan Burn (who plays predominantly left-back), and Sven Botman, who is out due to a long-term ACL injury.

According to MailOnline, if Fulham is able to come to a deal for Guehi’s defensive partner Joachim Andersen, Newcastle’s pursuit of the player may encounter difficulties shortly.

The West London team has already put up a second bid for the 28-year-old, which is less than his rumored £40 million valuation and is valued at an initial £25 million plus a further £5 million in add-ons.
