Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has issued a message to Newcastle United regarding their pursuit of Marc Guehi.
For the England defender, Newcastle has had three bids turned down by Palace; according to Sky Sports, a fourth offer—which is reportedly estimated to be worth about £65 million with add-ons—is ‘likely’ to be turned down. In the last two weeks of the transfer window, the Magpies will need to break their transfer record in order to get Guehi.
According to Jordan, the former chairman of Palace, Newcastle has to increase their offer to £70 million in order to have a chance of signing Guehi this summer.
Jordan stated on talkSPORT that “I believe Palace, like most clubs, will try and get the maximum amount possible.” They ought to be shooting for more than £70 million, in my opinion. Leicester sold Wesley Fofana to Chelsea for a sum of £70 million.
“Marc Guehi is around the same age as Fofana when he was sold, perhaps a year older, but at this point in his career, center halves—especially excellent ones who can play the way he does—are extremely hard to come by.
Therefore, Palace has every right to pursue this to the maximum extent that they can, and they have standards to consider. Pay what Crystal Palace demands if you want the greatest center-half in English football, or one of the top center-halves in the league, since Newcastle, regardless of Financial Fair Play, has the right to print money.
“Why would [Crystal Palace] sell [Michael] Olise when they have money there, a center-half, and a manager [Oliver Glasner] that they think they can develop around? According to [Steve] Parish, the proposals they were receiving lacked sufficient persuasiveness.
Jordan added, “If Newcastle want to fiddle and fart about and go up by five-million tranches, they can fiddle and fart about and get him at the end of the transfer window when they eventually reach Palace’s valuation which is £70 million and you can have this player otherwise go away.” Referring to Newcastle’s three rejected bids thus far, with a fourth expected to be rejected as well.
