Fabian Schar is facing a month on the sidelines for Newcastle United following his straight red card against Southampton on Saturday.

After a collision between Schar and Southampton striker Ben Brereton Diaz in the first thirty minutes, the Magpies went down to ten men. Schar sprang up and waved toward Brereton Diaz with his head, but Diaz then slammed the Swiss center back to the ground before collapsing himself.

Schar was sent off by referee Craig Pawson for what he considered to be aggressive behavior, while Brereton Diaz received a yellow card. Players who receive three red cards for aggressive behavior are suspended for three matches.

As things stand, Schar will miss the forthcoming games against AFC Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur before returning to action for the Premier League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, September 15 (4:30pm kickoff). United head coach Eddie Howe suggested the club may look to appeal the decision and reduce the suspension.

Schar will be ineligible for the Carabao Cup second round encounter against Nottingham Forest next week due to a red card ban in England, which is different from yellow card suspensions, which are only applicable to the tournament in which they are granted.

Examples of this occurring with Newcastle in the past include Nick Pope’s 2023 Carabao Cup final exclusion against Manchester United due to his red card against Liverpool in the Premier League. After receiving a red card in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final victory against Southampton in the second leg, Bruno Guimaraes was suspended for three Premier League games but returned to play in the championship game.

Schar received his second red card for Newcastle after being controversially sent off late in a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in May 2021. The Magpies filed an appeal, but the three-match suspension for the center back was confirmed by an impartial tribunal.
