Chelsea is reportedly considering a reunion with the England player after a three-month summer transfer drama.
Newcastle United would suffer a severe blow if Chelsea were to sign Crystal Palace player and England international Marc Guehi back to Stamford Bridge in January. The 24-year-old center defender has long been coveted by the Magpies, who had four offers rejected this summer, one of which was reportedly worth £65 million.
The Eagles had demanded a fee of £70 million, but the Palace board would not budge, therefore Guehi remained in Croydon. He continued and has played every minute of this season for Oliver Glasner.
Guehi’s current deal is scheduled to expire in 2026, therefore it would be devastating for the Magpies if they don’t sign the England international in January. A new danger has surfaced. It was previously speculated that Guehi’s contract position would allow Eddie Howe to negotiate a low-cost agreement, perhaps leading to a January transfer up to St. James’ Park.
Football Insider reports that even though they signed two center-backs in the summer transfer window—Tosin Adarabioyo and Aaron Anselmino—Enzo Maresca’s team is reportedly monitoring Guehi’s situation. Guehi came to Selhurst Park for a reported £20 million in 2021, and he has since made 115 appearances—111 of them starts—for the south London club. He was also England’s best player during the Euro 2024 campaign earlier this summer and was included in Lee Carsley’s Nations League squad during the most recent international break.
Guehi’s talent, dedication, and professionalism were recently recognized when the club head coach awarded him the captain’s armband for the upcoming campaign. They recently held Chelsea to a disappointing 1-1 stalemate at Stamford Bridge under his leadership.
However, Maresca’s club grew rapidly this summer, and at one time, it looked like almost 40 players were on the first team books. Despite adding four defenders to the mix, it seems the Blues still want to bolster their central defensive options. The Blues will now get ready to play Bournemouth this weekend when the Premier League returns, having played one victory, one draw, and one loss so far this season.
