Newcastle United moved for former Lazio winger Jordan Lukaku shortly before signing Miguel Almiron
Jordan Lukaku, a Belgian international, disclosed that he had a medical examination at Newcastle United and that he “knew” he would not succeed.
Five and a half years ago, the Magpies were aggressively attempting to shatter their transfer record. In January 2019, Mike Ashley reluctantly let Rafa Benitez release the purse constraints in order to pursue a winger.
Brother of former Manchester United and Chelsea striker Romelu, Lukaku has become a dynamic wide winger for Serie A powerhouse Lazio. Despite his career stalling due to a catastrophic knee injury, Toon’s curiosity persisted.
But during his medical, the truth would come to light, and Newcastle withdrew from the agreement. At the time, sources said the Magpies had approved a loan transfer, but Lukaku has since said it would have been a long-term change.
As it occurred, Newcastle acquired Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United a few weeks later for a club record amount. The now 30-year-old, whose injury problems have continued, talked to So Foot about his botched St. James’ Park move.
When you’re young and a good athlete, it hurts to not even be able to ascend the stairs, according to Lukaku. “In order to play and prove myself again, I had to go on loan.” The director of sports believed that anyway.
As per his statement, I was stuck here since there was no way for clubs to come get me. I brought an offer of €21 million from Newcastle to present him the following day. I slipped against Napoli before the medical examination in England.
“Even though I knew I would lose, I went there to prove to Lazio that I wasn’t done.” I even snapped the picture because (Rafa) Benítez wanted me, but my ailments got the better of me again.
