The 2024–2025 campaign has started with the Magpies undefeated.
Newcastle United, which just lost out on a spot in Europe the previous season, is aware that making a trip back this time around is their top objective. After being undefeated in the Premier League and defeating Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, the Magpies are presently on course to win both a cup run and some hardware.
Eddie Howe acknowledged that there is still much space for development, but most people believe that his best is yet to come.
So, who has performed well for Newcastle and who still needs to improve? ChronicleLive has examined the campaign’s winners and losers thus far.
Winners
Having forced his way into the starting lineup, Harvey Barnes is the biggest beneficiary of Newcastle United’s strong start to the season. Shortly after joining the Magpies, the former Leicester City winger had a foot injury. He didn’t play again until February of the previous season, when he played mostly off the bench.
The 26-year-old winger scored the game’s first goal in the victory against Spurs after coming off the bench at Bournemouth to set up Anthony Gordon for the equalizer. Barnes, who appears destined to start for Wolves, has benefited from Howe’s choice to shift Gordon to the right.
Gordon, an England international, is another player who has shown promise this season. The Magpies winger acknowledged in a recent interview that he was still getting used to playing on the international level following the summer’s European Championships. Despite not being at his best, he has already scored one goal.
Emil Krafth has been able to play due to injuries and suspensions at the back, and he has performed admirably in the middle of defense. It helps to have a guy like Tino Livramento, who has maybe been Newcastle’s best player this season.
Losers
Kieran Trippier is the most noteworthy player missing from the game in terms of minutes played struggles. Although the recently departed England international was a constant during his time at St. James’ Park, he lost his starting position early in the season to Livramento.
With the Turkish transfer window still open, he has only played a cameo in the second half of the team’s match against Bournemouth, and rumors of a potential departure from the team persist. On the right side of the field, winger Miguel Almiron has had his playing time reduced. Given Barnes and Gordon’s strong season debuts, it seems unlikely that the Paraguayan will find his way back into the starting lineup.
The former Atlanta United winger was rumored to be joining Charlotte FC in the Major League Soccer, but they were unable to pay Newcastle’s asking price. It is obvious that his time at the club is drawing to an end given his meager 2 minutes of Premier League play thus far this season.
Odysseas Vlachodimos is the last struggling player and maybe the most unusual summer move. Within weeks after completing a contract, the Greek goalkeeper was being linked to a loan transfer away from Tyneside.
Despite not having been selected for the matchday squad, Martin Dubravka is ranked higher in the pecking order than the former Nottingham Forest shot stopper.
