Despite Liverpool’s interest in Anthony Gordon, Eddie Howe has made it plain that the club’s acquisitions, including Gordon, are a part of a long-term strategy.
The North East company faced pressure to increase sales as the financial year-end deadline approached in order to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The Magpies contacted Liverpool in an attempt to negotiate a deal for Gordon as June 30 drew near.
Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez, two center backs, were mentioned as possible additions to St. James’ Park in a different deal. It became contentious when Newcastle demanded Jarell Quansah as part of a deal that would see Gordon move to Anfield.
But Howe’s team was able to fulfill PSR standards because of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh’s sales. Liverpool supporters, who expect to see Gordon return to Merseyside in the future, are still talking about him despite these changes.
During a news conference, Howe discussed player moves and future plans at Newcastle, stating that Gordon was one of his acquisitions that was done with the long term in mind. “I’m very, very proud of every single player that we signed in that period (when Newcastle were struggling),” added the 46-year-old.
“It is rather simple to reflect on a transfer window and evaluate the players you signed three years later. However, you have to return to the circumstances of those times, when we were attempting to resign players and in the relegation zone. Doing it is not a simple task. Additionally, you are hiring with the long term in mind as well as the short term.
“That work was good in retrospect. I won’t criticize every acquisition because our goal was to remain in the league, but I am really happy of the job we completed and the players we currently have thanks to those transfer windows.
We adore them so much, so I believe it all comes down to the choices you make at that particular time. I believe that everyone is capable of having a very lofty head.”
