Expert opinions on whether Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa should retire following his most recent concussion are one thing. For the head coach of a different team to suggest that Tua should retire is something else entirely.
Antonio Pierce, the Raiders coach, stated as much to reporters on Friday.
Pierce remarked, “To be honest, I would tell him to retire.” “It’s not worthwhile. It’s not worthwhile. When I played the game, I didn’t observe anything similar to what I’ve seen happen to him three times. Unsettling. The athletes’ faces are immediately visible on the pitch. It is evident how urgent it is to seek Tua assistance. I simply believe that he will live longer than he will be able to play football at some time. Observe
The remarks caused several people to take notice, mainly because coaches are usually careful not to discuss players who are under contract with other teams. It has been questioned by several authors and readers if Pierce’s remarks constitute tampering.
The NFL claims they don’t. Only when a coach indicates that he would like to purchase the rights to a player who is presently under contract with another team does tampering become a problem.
It didn’t feel quite right, though. Particularly after Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel essentially asked everyone to refrain from discussing Tua’s retirement.
McDaniel told reporters on Friday, “I just wish that people would listen to me for a moment and understand that discussing his future is not in his best interest. So, I’m going to beg of everyone who genuinely cares, that that should be the last thing on your mind because — what do you think if I were to answer that question, I’d be like, ‘All right, this is my thoughts on his career,’ and he read it? Regardless of whether he agreed or disagreed, I’ve just made him worse. I’m not going to take advantage of this. Regarding Pierce’s comments, the Dolphins declined to respond. Nonetheless, McDaniel’s remarks make logic.
Evaluating the elements that will influence Tua’s choice is one thing. That is what we have accomplished. It’s another to tell him what you think he ought to do. We won’t do that; we haven’t done it.
Once he is cleared to play, it is up to him to decide. And whatever choice he chooses, everyone ought to appreciate and accept it.
