TRAVERSE CITY – Due to a “slight tweek” in his groin, Detroit Red Wings 2024 first-round selection Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is not playing against the Dallas Stars today.

Game 1 of their two-game prospect series saw Brandsegg-Nygard look great as he played on Detroit’s top line and registered an assist in a 5-1 victory over Dallas on Saturday.

Director of Player Development for Detroit Dan Cleary stated, “I don’t know what the number scale is, but it’s not bad at all. There’s no sense in risking it with a quick turnaround.”

Cleary anticipates that the Norwegian left wing will be prepared for Thursday’s Traverse City training camp opener.

Whether the physically developed Brandsegg-Nygard has a chance to make the Detroit team this season has been the subject of much discussion. If the Red Wings decide not to keep him in North America, he signs a contract to play with Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League.

Yzerman’s Call

That choice will, of course, ultimately be made by Steve (Yzerman). However, Michael will also have a say in that choice, according to Cleary. “He was at Skelleftea just before coming here, so it will be a terrific experience for him in any case. Thus, I’m not sure. We’ll see the outcome. He will undoubtedly participate in a few preseason games to gain experience. We will simply observe from a distance.

For someone his age, Brandsegg-Nygard’s game is sophisticated. At the World Championships, Norway deployed him, lining him up with NHL player Mats Zuccarello.

As Cleary put it, “He’s a really strong kid.” He is obviously not eighteen years old physically, thus he is in good form and fit. He will, however, undoubtedly gain from the minor ice, in my opinion. He is powerful enough to win those 50/50 fights and get loose in front because of his excellent shot and release timing. I can’t wait to watch him perform. He and several other players seemed really solid to me yesterday.
