Despite some luck along the way, Newcastle United has started the Premier League season undefeated.
Chief referee Howard Webb of Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL] has provided an explanation of a crucial VAR ruling that has kept Newcastle United undefeated in the Premier League thus far.
Eddie Howe’s team just defeated Wolves 2-1, moving them up to third place in the standings with ten of a possible twelve points. Despite not being at their most fluid after the first four rounds of games, the Magpies have amassed a respectable amount of points, although with a little bit of luck along the way.
It’s possible that Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth was their worst game of the year. Marcus Tavernier’s goal in the first half was equalized by Anthony Gordon in the 77th minute, and midfielder Dango Outtara’s header from a corner kick late in the game gave the Cherries a chance to win. On-field referee David Coote awarded the goal, but Tim Robinson and Neil Davies of VAR chose to examine the play.
After Coote was shown the video of the ball hitting Outtara’s arm, the goal was disallowed due to a “factual decision,” maintaining Newcastle’s perfect start to the season. As part of the Premier League’s Mic’d ‘p series, former top flight official Webb has provided an explanation for a few of the VAR calls from the first three rounds of games.
Webb informed the Premier League, “In this instance, the ball strikes Ouattara’s shoulder, upper-arm area.” “It’s difficult to pinpoint with absolute certainty where.

“Equally, if the goal had been disallowed by the on-field officials handball, I don’t think there’s evidence here to say that there’s no handball either. So again, it goes back to ‘referee’s call’.
“It’s an important concept. And for those factual matters you need evidence. It’s very clear that the on-field call is wrong, I don’t think we have it here.”
