Along with Gary Lineker, a legend of Leicester City, Alan Shearer is a commentator on BBC’s Match of the Day and plays a significant role in Amazon Prime’s coverage of the Premier League and Champions League.
The renowned England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has been the mainstay of Amazon Prime’s commentary crew for the Champions League this season, which got underway this week.
Since ending his brilliant playing career, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer—and close friend of Leicester City icon Gary Lineker—has built a strong reputation. He has received praise for both his move into the commentary box and his performance as a pundit and commentator on Match of the Day, where he collaborates with Lineker.
Geordie and Lineker had such a strong relationship that the Foxes legend broke down in tears when Shearer supported him following his removal from the BBC due to his anti-government Tweets.
Astounding net worth
Shearer has accumulated a substantial personal wealth both before and after his playing career. The 54-year-old, who had already won the league with his former team and established himself with Southampton, broke a transfer record when he transferred to Newcastle United for £15 million from Blackburn Rovers in 1996, according to Wales Online.
He has been able to keep his reputation as one of football’s most recognizable faces because to his work in the media for the BBC, Al-Jazeera, and now Amazon. He also cohosts the podcast The Rest is Football with Micah Richards and Lineker. Just the BBC provides him with a salary of £380,000.
Shearer’s BBC remuneration, however, was significantly cut this year; the commentator lost £65,000 from his £445,000 2022–2023 contract. Nevertheless, Goal estimates his net worth to be an astounding £40 million.
Shearer’s wife avoids spotlight
The longtime girlfriend of the football hero, Lainya, whom he first met while at Southampton, is the happy wife of the icon. Shearer was in his second year with the club when he was married in 1991, having lived with her parents on the south coast.
They have three kids together. Alan has told a story of how, upon moving to Blackburn from Southampton in 1992, Lainya became enraged with him.
Lainya was open about her sentiments over Shearer’s move to the northwest, even though she was expecting their first child, Chloe, at the time.
Shearer reflected on his time at Blackburn on an episode of the Rest of Football. He also related a funny story about his wife’s response to their new residence, saying, “When she was eight months pregnant, she looked at me in the car and said, ‘What the f*** have you done?'”
It’s well knowledge that Lainya avoids the spotlight, which frequently centers on her spouse, in order to preserve her privacy
Nevertheless, during a recent interview, Ruud Gullit mentioned Lainya. Gullit, who managed Newcastle and had a contentious relationship with Shearer, particularly in the latter part of his tenure, brought her up.
After a successful tenure that included bringing the team to an FA Cup final, Ruud Gullit quit his position at Newcastle. But the turning point in his career came when he chose not to start Alan Shearer in a derby defeat to Sunderland in August 1999.
Shearer subsequently said that he might have left the team if Newcastle had won that match.
The rift between Gullit and Shearer appeared unbreakable at the time, but it appears that time heals, for the two eventually reunited to provide punditry for ITV’s 2014 World Cup coverage in Brazil, where they displayed no ill will. Gullit reflected on this and told the Sun, “It’s odd because we worked together for ITV at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. When we got to the party, all we could do was laugh and drink together.”
“I cannot believe it… in our house, you were the No. 1 guy we hated, and now you two are laughing and joking with each other,” said Alan’s wife, he continued. Despite the fact that we had met several times in TV studios, we clicked so wonderfully that night. Even when you can’t agree, you may still show each other respect.”
High-profile family
Shearer is not the only well-known member of his family. Will, Chloe, and Hollie, his children, have all attracted a lot of attention on social media.
Will has 16,000 followers, Chloe has 18,000, and Hollie commands an astounding 81,000 fans. Her participation on TikTok, where she showcases her musical abilities, has helped her get an additional 335,000 fans.
Chloe, a talent manager who has already worked with Soccer Aid, comes from a family with a long history in sports.
When it comes to building contacts in the sports industry, Shearer’s children have undoubtedly done what their father did. Joe Marchant, a 28-year-old rugby player for Stade Francais in France, is Hollie’s current boyfriend.
Shearer has seen that after Hollie and Joe began dating, his daughter has been more interested in rugby than football. He made a lighthearted remark about her partner selection, saying, “I’m just glad it’s not a footballer.”
On the other side, Chloe is linked to Micky Young, a former scrum-half. Before relocating to Gloucester last year, the 35-year-old rugby player played for the Newcastle Falcons for two spells.
The Falcons recently revealed that they would honor Young with a testimonial season that will feature a special football banquet with Alan Shearer in attendance.
Backing an old pal
Gary Lineker opened out about how he cried when Shearer and other football friends publicly supported him when he was taken off the air by the BBC.
The host of Match of the Day was suspended after he declined to provide an apology for a tweet in which he made a comparison between Nazi Germany’s rhetoric and the then-government’s small boat policy.
Shearer and Ian Wright, his coworkers, also left in support of him. Later, Lineker said, “I just found it incredible,” to the podcast Ruthie’s Table 4. When Ian and Alan stood by me, I started crying in the back of a black cab, and everyone else did too.
