Newcastle United’s poor summer transfer window has one bright spot: it has increased their January spending capacity.
Newcastle had a disappointing summer as they made bids well into the deadline day but were unable to secure any of their major transfer targets.
After Paul Mitchell was named St. James’ Park’s sporting director, Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace became Newcastle’s first choice.
However, after putting in many bids for the centre-back, who is valued at £70 million, Newcastle was unable to complete a deal.
The focus then shifted to finding a replacement right winger, and Newcastle placed a last-minute £50 million offer for Anthony Elanga of Nottingham Forest; however, the Premier League team turned down the offer on the day of the deadline.
Paul Mitchell is under intense pressure to perform in January because of rumors that his job as director is already in jeopardy.
Newcastle United’s January transfer budget
It became evident after placing offers for both Guehi and Elanga that Newcastle did have summer spending money, even with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules restricting the team’s spending.
With a £6.2 million transfer profit at the end of the summer, Newcastle will finally have a sizable cash to devote to Eddie Howe’s team in January.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle will have about £70 million in transfer funds available for the January transfer window.
Following their initial interest in the England international, Newcastle is expected to make a move again for Marc Guehi. With a budget of £70 million, they should be able to complete a deal.
With his contract expiring and the Premier League season off to a bad start, Palace, who had been holding out for over £70 million in the summer, should see their asking price drop.
Newcastle have two key areas to address in January
Despite not playing especially well in any of their first three games of the season, Newcastle has had a fantastic start to the campaign and is now sitting third in the Premier League standings.
Position | Team | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | For | Against | Diff | Points |
1 | Manchester City | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 11 | 3 | 8 | 12 |
2 | Arsenal | 4 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 6 | 1 | 5 | 10 |
3 | Newcastle | 4 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 6 | 3 | 3 | 10 |
4 | Liverpool | 4 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 7 | 1 | 6 | 9 |
If Howe can sustain Newcastle’s performance and put the team in contention for a top-four finish, the January transfer window will present a fantastic chance to boost morale and take care of two important issues.
Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles want to return in the New Year, but Newcastle still needs a top-tier center-back, and Guehi or someone else would be their first choice.
A winger should be able to be signed, given Miguel Almiron has only played 63 minutes this season. The budget should also allow for this
Although Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon have both had excellent beginnings to the season, there is a sharp decline in quality after them, thus a right-sided winger with specialization should be a key priority.
Although the German winger Leroy Sane has been named as a target, a January trade seems improbable given his salary.
