Overall though, ten points from five league games is a respectable result; averaging two points a game would easily place you in the top four.

Eddie Howe’s team has a very winnable cup fixture on Tuesday, and we have all seen worse NUFC season openers than this one.
Normally, this set of results would indicate that a crisis is unlikely, but this season is not without its problems.
Lewis Miley is the only key player still out for the midfield, but even with him returning, it’s been terrible, in my view.

Sandro Tonali is being hero-worshipped as though he is the secret to making things work.
I apologize, but there’s much more to it than that. To begin with, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes have both played horribly this year. Although Sean Longstaff, who was benched against Fulham, was taking a lot of the stick for the midfield’s collapse, we really lost considerably more ground without him yesterday. You may say whatever you want about Sean Longstaff, but the fact remains that Newcastle United is a superior team when he plays.

In my opinion, achieving outcomes is more crucial than engaging in fantasy football and selecting the eleven finest players Newcastle United has to offer.

Under Eddie Howe, our most successful squad to date finished in the top four in the 2022–2023 campaign. The squad didn’t score as many goals as they did the previous campaign. It didn’t have Harvey Barnes or Anthony Gordon from the previous season, nor did it truly have much Alexander Isak from that campaign. Finding what functioned well for us as a team helped us get there. The Newcastle United squad demonstrated a strong ability to defend, press, and battle as a cohesive one. Their efforts were successful, and the desired outcomes were attained.
Critics took issue with Dan Burn starting at left defense and with Allan Saint-Maximin being benched in favor of the two Joes on the left. Regarding Sean Longstaff, complaints have been made and continue to be made. Still, it was successful.
If Gordon had 20 goal involvements and Isak scored 25 goals last season, it wouldn’t have made a difference to me. Despite having players like Gordon, Barnes, Isak, Tonali, Livramento, Hall, and Joelinton who are perhaps better than others, if the team is having trouble and the results aren’t showing up. compared to guys like Burn, Longstaff, Murphy, and Almiron, who genuinely put us in the top four. Which is ultimately what matters; otherwise, what’s the point?
The squad that works well together from start to finish is the best. There aren’t any relationships, chemistry, or anything there right now. Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon’s magical moments have been essential to us. That doesn’t cut it, and it doesn’t make us a strong team.
We are not playing as a team right now, so we need to find the Almiron/Trippier sort of connection, the two Joes relationship, and the midfield needs to learn how to function as a three, whether it is attacking or defending.
In the end, I believe that the midfield has to be changed. As a CM, Joelinton in particular has served his time, and I believe he should go on to other challenges where he can still cause harm. That place appears stale. It is predictable, and it is far too simple to oppose us. Eddie is hopefully able to solve our concerns.
