Newcastle United are looking to tie players down to new contracts at St James’ Park.
Many Newcastle players are in the last year of their contracts; if they can’t come to an agreement on a new one, they can depart on a free transfer the following summer. A number of players have contracts that are scheduled to expire at the end of the current campaign, including Emil Krafth, Callum Wilson, Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Martin Dubravka, Jamaal Lascelles, and Kieran Trippier.
Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy, the goalkeeping combo, both have contracts that end in June 2025.
In response to a question about the status of the contract negotiations, Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle, emphasized the significance of guaranteeing the futures of important players.
Howe stated, “I can’t give you any details because I’m a little detached from that, but the club is always thinking about how to make sure we protect the long-term interests of the club with player contracts and avoid difficult situations so that work is always ongoing.”
Sean Longstaff is the only player under 30 who graduated from the academy among the first team players whose contracts expire at the end of the season. In light of the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules, which prioritize club sales of academy players, it will be financially advantageous for the team to sign Longstaff to a new contract.
Additionally, Howe wants to settle the contract disputes within his team before the campaign’s last few months.

Howe told The Gazette, “I think talking more broadly, going to Joelinton’s situation when his contract was getting to a delicate time.” “As a football team, we don’t want to be battling over losing players to free transfers for a variety of reasons.
“The main reason for that is probably that it’s a distraction for the players, and from my experience, when players start to run down their contracts into that final year, it’s a very uncertain time for them and they don’t play well.”
“We want players performing to the best of their abilities, but we also want to safeguard each player’s distinct asset worth. The cost of replacing any player in or near our team will be high, therefore we must exercise extreme caution while making such choices.
Following summer transfer rumors, Newcastle is trying to extend contracts to important players like Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak after signing Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton to long-term agreements last season.
Howe said, “I think that communication and resolving any issues is really important if there are issues with either player, or any player.”
“I believe that the secret to your players’ performances is having them secure in their futures. Transfer rumors and contracts that could expire early are things you want to avoid since, in my opinion, they are distracting and rarely advantageous to the player or the team.
Therefore, I hope that there are few extraneous distractions and that players are constantly focused on their performances.
Gaining their security and happiness is our finest course of action, but there must be a balance due of pay structures and PSR, which forbid us from acting carelessly.
“Thus, we must make the correct calls, but getting those players to perform at their highest levels will undoubtedly have a significant impact on our season.”
