After their Carabao Cup third-round match against AFC Wimbledon was postponed and rescheduled, the Magpies will play Pep Guardiola’s team at St. James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s team will be hoping to recover from their loss at Fulham last weekend.

The 37-year-old Australian whistler Gillett will be in charge of his sixth game of the season and will be the guy in the center of the action. His previous appearances have been in the top flight, the Champions League, and the Community Shield at Wembley.

When the former A-League official was called for United’s 1-1 draw against Watford in September 2021, he became the first referee born outside of the British Isles to officiate a Premier League match. In 2023, he was added to the FIFA list once again.

Last season, Gillett was assigned three Newcastle matches: the FA Cup penalty shootout victory at Blackburn Rovers, the 2-0 league victory at Fulham, and the Carabao Cup quarterfinal loss at Chelsea (which ended in penalty kicks).
