Former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness believes Premier League clubs will vote to stop transfers like Odysseas Vlachodimos’ move to Newcastle United.
On June 30, toon leaders had little choice but to frantically work to prevent a possible reduction of points. The FFP/PSR regulations raised their ugly head, forcing the Magpies to let go of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
Vlachodimos, Nottingham Forest’s backup goalkeeper, went in the other way for an estimated £20 million as part of the Anderson transfer. Although he hasn’t been on the bench this season, this is the most Newcastle has spent for a goalie.
The action was similar to what other teams had done to circumvent budgetary constraints. The £38 million sale of Ian Maatsen by Chelsea to Aston Villa also raised eyebrows. For over £20 million, unproven rookie Omari Kellyman chose a different route.
The Vlachodimos trade “smells,” according to former Toffees head Wyness, and clubs will soon vote to prevent similar deals. “Newcastle are one of the prime candidates for creative accounting around some of their PSR deals,” he told Football Insider. They are not alone in this. Forest, Everton, and Villa all became involved.
It’s definitely within the guidelines. However, if the clubs decide at the meeting that’s what they want, I would anticipate some possible rule adjustments at the conclusion of next summer. That seems likely to happen. The Vlachodimos arrangement reeks of PSR. You can proceed if you are inside the guidelines; after all, it’s the rulebook, after all.
“The Premier League has no authority to make decisions that deviate from the regulations. To amend such regulations, a vote of the clubs will be required. The league can only enforce the regulations; the 20 shareholders are the only ones with the authority to alter them.
