Man City’s apparent success in their Associated Party Transactions (APT) case against the Premier League could reap unexpected benefits for Newcastle, Everton and Aston Villa, according to Stefan Borson.
In addition to fighting an APT case, the Premier League winners are presently facing 115 allegations related to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The amount that clubs may be paid in sponsorships by affiliated parties is restricted by APT regulations.
Man City has filed a lawsuit against the Premier League for allegedly “illegal” regulations.
After a two-week closed-door hearing, The Times revealed that City had won the case significantly when a vote to change the regulations was removed off the agenda for the most recent Premier League meeting.
Could Newcastle, Everton & Aston Villa benefit from Man City win?
Aston Villa, Everton, and Newcastle are three teams who have recently fought fiercely against PSR regulations.
Everton, in particular, has experienced the full weight of the restrictions following their eight-point punishment from the previous year.
But according to Borson, a former consultant to Manchester City and expert in football finance, the Cityzens’ recent success may provide new revenue streams for teams hoping to compete in England’s top division.
but let’s say that they wanted the APT regulations declared illegal and mostly removed,” Borson said to Football Insider.
The irony is that teams in that developing group like Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Everton—should Friedkin purchase them—would have been the main winners.
They are now limited in part by the fact that they are unable to raise their pay cost to the point where they can regularly compete with the top four.
“Obviously, you would see some more significant sponsorship and commercial transactions going through those clubs if there were no APT rules.”
