Rangers takeover: Stefan Borson shares ‘big’ claim as investor plots Ibrox deal
Rangers securing fresh investment from a new owner and returning to the Champions League would make a “big” difference to the club’s financial situation.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Scottish giants’ target has to be qualifying for European football’s premier club competition again.
Philippe Clement’s side are competing in the Europa League this season after being knocked out of the Champions League in the qualifying rounds.
Although they beat Malmo 2-0 in their first group stage game, Rangers are still on course to earn far less than Celtic from their European exploits after Brendan Rodgers’s side qualified for the Champions League.
Speculation has emerged recently around a potential takeover at Ibrox after City AM reported on 27 August American investors are interested in buying the club.
Former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness exclusively revealed to Football Insider a “Far East investor” is currently weighing up a potential Rangers takeover bid.
“If you can get back in the Champions League, it has an outsize impact.
“Given the other revenue streams and the very light domestic TV deal, if you can get into the Champions League and earn those Champions League revenues, it is going to be transformational for Rangers.
“It would also allow them to continue to compete with Celtic.
“While they are out of the Champions League, they are going to find it difficult because they are going to be £20-£40million behind in revenue and profit because a lot of this stuff goes straight to the bottom line.
“They are going to find themselves quite a long way behind financially for every year they are not in the Champions League.
“They need to get back into the Champions League and any new owner that can invest such that they achieve that is going to make a big difference.
“That’s got to be their big target.”
