“Everyone knows that Newcastle’s fans are the best in the Premier League,” said a former Wimbledon player.

To be fair, though, tonight will see this specific former Wimbledon star in both camps.

as AFC Wimbledon takes on Newcastle United.

Back then, Warren Barton was one of the main players as Wimbledon achieved their highest-ever league finish—sixth in the first division.

That came before Warren Barton joined Newcastle United, where he was a member of the team that finished runners-up in the Premier League in both the 1995–96 and 1996–97 seasons.

On October 1, 2024, Warren Barton spoke with the official AFC Wimbledon website.

What do you think of Newcastle’s current position and what makes them such a unique club?

“No one can deny that Newcastle’s supporters are the greatest in the Premier League,”

No matter what, they support their team. It’s a one team city, the football club is the heartbeat of it. It is an honor to perform for such supporters. They put in a lot of effort from Monday through Friday, therefore, it’s up to you to put in even more effort on the weekends to win for them.

Under the new owners, they are currently moving in the correct direction, but it will take some time.

At the weekend, they more than equaled Manchester City, who are regarded as the greatest team in the world.

I’m now interested in watching how they fare against a Wimbledon team that will present them with different challenges.

Was it a tough choice to leave the club, given the success and unity you experienced there?

It was a piece of the conveyor belt the club’s scouting team had built.

I chatted with Manchester City and Celtic while I was traveling to Blackburn Rovers. I also spoke with Arsenal.

But there’s no questioning that when you talk to Kevin Keegan.

I had a great time transitioning from a member of the Crazy Gang to an entertainer up there. I was saying goodbye to people, but that’s just half of it.
