If Man United tries to entice Eddie Howe to Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag under scrutiny, the Magpies will strike back.
If Manchester United calls for Eddie Howe, Newcastle United’s leaders will respond with the same “back off” warning.
After a lackluster string of performances under Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils are under pressure from the supporters. Howe had already been considered by Man United, and even though the relationship between the head coach and former sports director Dan Ashworth ended amicably, some influential people at Old Trafford would still consider him a contender.
Upon taking over as Newcastle’s manager in 2022, Ashworth gave Howe a long-term contract. And early in his career, the former England player pulled off the same ruse with Ten Hag.
The 53-year-old will want to give the Dutchman as much time as possible before making a choice, but if Man United loses at Aston Villa tomorrow, the fan base’s discontent might get worse. Newcastle’s position was straightforward when Howe was at the top of England’s list following Euro 2024 and the Magpies informed the FA that he was bound by a contract that required a hefty compensation payment to be released.
Despite all the talk of teething issues between Howe and Paul Mitchell, Ashworth’s replacement, Man United will receive the same response as England. The previous month, Mitchell declared, “We want Eddie Howe to be our head coach for as long as we can.”
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a co-owner of Man United, commented on his team’s difficulties yesterday but refrained from participating in the boss’s decision-making. “I like Erik,” he declared. Though ultimately it’s not my call, I believe he’s a really good coach.
The management group that oversees Manchester United is in charge of determining the best way to operate the team in a variety of areas. However, this group has only been in place since June or July; the other members, including [CEO] Omar [Berrada and [sporting director] Dan Ashworth, weren’t there in January, February, March, or April.
“They have only visited… They’ve just been there for a few weeks, so you might practically count it that way. As such, they should reflect and make some informed judgments.
“Our objective is very clear – we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously – that’s very clear.”
Howe has a seven-figure release clause in his contract with Newcastle, which is good for at least another five years.
