Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, was furious with his team after they lost, calling it “the worst defeat” since he joined the team two summers prior. The 59-year-old saw his team collapse in the second half and give up a commanding 2-0 lead at halftime while standing on the Amex Stadium touchline, clearly startled.

The Lilywhites, looking to continue their winning run of five games in all competitions, scored goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison to take a 2-0 lead and put the game firmly in the hands of the North Londoners. It was a perfect example of ‘a game of two halves’. But in the second half, Brighton changed completely, with goals from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, and former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck to cap off an incredible comeback for the Seagulls.

It took Postecoglou some time to come out of the locker room and speak to the press. When he did, he didn’t look up for the whole interview, giving the impression that he was still in shock from the crushing loss. Tottenham is presently in ninth place, eight places down from where they were this time last year, as the October international break draws near.

Postecoglou Slams Tottenham Side

He blamed a mentality issue for Sunday’s swift deterioration

In response to a question on the second half’s performance drop, Postecoglou offered a scathing assessment. He stated to Sky Sports:

It’s our worst loss since I’ve been here, which makes me really upset and very disappointed. We had really an awful second half; we got carried away and weren’t even close to where we should have been.”

“We kind of accepted our fate, which is hard to understand because we haven’t done that since I’ve been here,” he added when asked to clarify what he meant by “getting carried away.” Typically, we’ve battled for everything. You pay a price for not doing so, and we did too.”
