For Guehi and Palace, the season hasn’t started off well.
With rumours of a possible summer transfer to Newcastle United, Marc Guehi’s difficult start to the Crystal Palace season has persisted. Following their 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday, the Eagles have only won three of their first seven Premier League games this season.
Due to Guehi’s outstanding finish to the previous season and his impressive performance with England in the Euro 2024, Newcastle was forced to spend a significant portion of their summer transfer window attempting to sign the centre back. Although the historic failure to get his services was well reported, many people still feel that Guehi is suffering from the fallout from such a long-running, widely publicised transfer drama.
The game’s most contentious talking point occurred at the other end of the field when the central defender went to ground after being pulled down by Virgil van Dijk, missing a penalty in the process. On Saturday, Diogo Jota gave Liverpool the early lead and the defender was caught off guard and failed to intercept a cross.
The season has started poorly, and it’s unclear if Guehi is finding it difficult to adjust to life without his long-time defensive partner Joachim Andersen, if Palace’s new back five formation is to blame for his poor play, or if the unsuccessful Newcastle switch is still bothering him.
This comes in the midst of ongoing rumours of a possible January relocation to Tyneside. The winter transfer window may be the last opportunity for Palace to get top bucks if the defender does not sign a new deal.
Peter Crouch, who covered the Saturday lunchtime match between Palace and the England international, thinks the player will soon move on from Selhurst Park to take on a new challenge.
“I believe that was a really important call for this football team [Palace] to hang onto him. Newcastle was their first aim, and I believe they came in with 70 million,” Crouch stated in real time on TNT Sports.
Yes, it continued all summer. I believe Guehi will go; I believe they will have a difficult time holding him, and I believe Liverpool and other teams will be interested in him. He’s done a good job of sort of moving on, in my opinion. After the Euros, he attracted a lot of attention, but he’s got his chin down. He’s moving forward because he needs to fulfil his duties to Palace.
“He’s a leader,” co-pundit Joe Cole said. He is a very good player and captain of his team. The two best centre halves in England are John Stones and Mark Guehi, if not the best overall. I believe they have confirmed that now. Thus, in my opinion, he’s a top drawer.”
