Brighton & Hove Albion’s rising star Evan Ferguson has revealed that Newcastle United defender Sven Botman ranks among the toughest opponents he’s ever faced. At just 19, Ferguson has already racked up 50 Premier League appearances, so when he speaks about formidable defenders, it’s worth listening.

When asked by ESPN to name his three most challenging opponents, Ferguson didn’t hesitate: “I’d say Camavinga, Saliba, and Botman of Newcastle.” High praise, especially for Botman, who has been sidelined since March with a serious ACL injury. Though he’s made strides in recovery, the Dutchman isn’t expected back on the pitch until December, much to Newcastle’s frustration.

Despite coping without Botman, Eddie Howe’s side could certainly use his presence as they aim for a top-four finish after a disappointing seventh place last season. Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League with 12 points from their first seven matches, Newcastle are set to host Brighton at St James’ Park on October 19.

Both teams are neck and neck in terms of form this season, with identical records of three wins, three draws, and one loss. With Botman still out, Newcastle’s Fabian Schar and Dan Burn will look to shut down Ferguson, who might be relieved not to face the towering Dutchman again. However, it promises to be a closely fought contest, with both sides eager to snatch all three points and build momentum.
