Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that the New York Jets and the Las Vegas Raiders are “still having conversations about a trade for wide receiver Davante Adams.”
She stated that the Raiders, who are seeking a second-round selection for the six-time Pro Bowler, had also spoken with the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New Orleans Saints. As Russini noted, Las Vegas also wants the team that signs Adams to pay the remainder of his contract through 2024.
As he attempts to depart Las Vegas, the Jets and Saints are reportedly “high” on Adams’ wish list—possibly at the top—according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on October 2. It’s possible that recent events have increased his likelihood of arriving in New York.
Despite what he and club owner Woody Johnson have stated, the Jets just sacked head coach Robert Saleh. This move appears to have been influenced by star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, either directly or indirectly. For the four-time MVP, getting Rodgers and Adams together would probably be a good idea.
The Jets offense’s current setup is ineffective. According to ESPN.com, Rodgers is only averaging 218.6 yards a game in his five games and is ranked 21st in QBR (49.5). He doesn’t seem to have a close relationship with his receivers and, at forty, he looks to be showing his age.
It begs the issue of how much Adams would benefit the Jets in real terms.
For the third week in a row, Adams has been sidelined by a hamstring injury, and his play was already deteriorating. He had his lowest receiving yardage average (67.3) since 2017 in the previous season, and he began 2024 with just 18 receptions for 209 yards and one score in three games.
But even without Rodgers, the Jets have already gone above and above to help him, and his arrival has forced the squad to adopt a “championship-or-bust” mentality.
Adams seemed like too much to ask for, and a second-round selection seemed like a harsh price to pay. However, continuing with the present club isn’t a winning plan, so general manager Joe Douglas needs to really assess if giving up draft selections for a temporary boost is worth it.
