After just five games in the season, the Las Vegas Raiders have already drastically altered their offensive approach. Aidan O’Connell is moving up to the starting position while Gardner Minshew is sitting down.
In an ideal world, O’Connell would start for the remainder of the season and do far better than Minshew did. But there’s a reason he was defeated in training camp’s quarterback competition. Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon believes Minshew will eventually take back the starting position this season.
“Aidan O’Connell is 1-for-6 with an interception and a 2.1 passer rating on long tries, so don’t get your hopes up for him. Gardner Minshew II is still with us in Las Vegas, according to a commentary by Gagnon published on October 11.
The Raiders could also consider other possibilities. Ryan Tannehill may make sense because he is a free agent. Another option for the team would be to trade for a quarterback like as Russell Wilson. In any case, if O’Connell performs poorly, his starting position is in jeopardy.
Turnovers Could Decide Aidan O’Connell’s Fate
Given his turnover problems, Minshew’s benching may have been determined mostly by these factors. Despite his outstanding completion percentage of 70.7%, he has five interceptions, which ties him for sixth most in the NFL.
Turnovers cannot be overcome by the Raiders because they lack quality on offence or defence. Luke Getsy, the offensive coordinator, thought Minshew was doing some good things, but the team could not rely on him to handle the ball.
Getsy stated, “I believe Gardner accomplished a lot of really good things,” at a news conference on October 10. He did, in fact. He was fully aware of the expectations associated with plays, in my opinion. I believe he understood the offence. His versatility, both within and outside of the huddle, etc.
“It really just boils down to us having to make sure we look after the football.” We simply had a few plays here and there that prevented us from having a chance to prevail. Therefore, we all agreed to attempt something different as a group.
There’s no guarantee O’Connell will get any better after throwing an interception against the Denver Broncos in Week 5, but the Raiders must take action. He should be able to maintain his starting position for the remainder of the season if he can at least reduce the turnovers.
Starting the Season as QB2 Could Be Beneficial for O’Connell
O’Connell has experience; last season, he was able to start ten games. But the previous season was quite the ride. Getsy believes that O’Connell will benefit in the long run by starting this season on the bench.
“Yes, I believe that watching is usually useful for young males. Getsy remarked, “I mean, that part of it is real.” “I’ve also gone through it in my professional life. There’s a big advantage when young guys get to watch it done and go through those procedures without having to do it themselves.
“And then, being able to go out and practise that, do it, and feel it yourself, certainly has a larger advantage. Thus, there is unquestionably an advantage, albeit little. I’m not sure how to respond to it, but there is undoubtedly an advantage. And to be honest, the way he goes about things each and every day speaks volumes about him and the reason he will be prepared to go.
