In a decisive move, the Canterbury Bulldogs have confirmed they will honor Josh Addo-Carr’s contract until it expires at the end of 2025, but his long-term future with the club remains uncertain. After weeks of speculation following his recent suspension, the Bulldogs have opted to give Addo-Carr time to resolve his future, either at Canterbury or elsewhere.

The club’s final decision comes after a turbulent period for the star winger, who tested positive for cocaine in a roadside test last month, leading to a four-game ban and missing the Bulldogs’ elimination final against Manly. Despite the off-field controversy, the Bulldogs have chosen to stand by Addo-Carr for now, giving him the opportunity to reflect on his future.

According to a club spokesperson, the Bulldogs will fulfill their obligations to Addo-Carr as he is contracted until the end of 2025. However, once the contract runs its course, the winger will have to reassess his options. Whether he remains in the blue and white jersey beyond 2025 or seeks new opportunities will depend on his performance and behavior moving forward.

“The club has made the decision to honor Josh’s contract, but we’re leaving the future open for both parties. There’s no denying Josh has been an incredible player for the Bulldogs, but he also has a responsibility to show professionalism off the field,” the spokesperson said.

This development comes amid the Bulldogs’ recent signing of Marcelo Montoya from the Warriors, sparking speculation that Addo-Carr’s days at the club were numbered. Montoya’s arrival adds competition in the backline and gives the Bulldogs flexibility as they plan for the future.

Phil Gould, the Bulldogs’ general manager of football, also weighed in on the decision. “We’re giving Josh the chance to focus on his football and family. We’ll respect his contract, but the future beyond that is something we’ll address when the time comes. It’s now up to Josh to decide what’s best for him,” Gould said.

The winger’s fate remains a talking point in rugby league circles, with some insiders suggesting a fresh start at another club might be the best option for both Addo-Carr and Canterbury. A potential swap deal with the Dragons for Makaile Ravalawa was previously discussed, but no deal has materialized as yet.

For now, Addo-Carr will be part of the Bulldogs’ squad for 2025, but the door remains open for a new chapter—whether at the club or elsewhere.
