Wests Tigers fans will likely have to wait an additional week to see Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau in action together for the club, following a setback before the 2025 NRL season. Koroisau received a three-match ban for a dangerous tackle in the final game of 2024, though he was allowed to serve part of the suspension while playing for Fiji in international matches. However, after Fiji’s unexpected loss to PNG, it looks like Koroisau will only serve two games internationally, meaning he will miss the Tigers’ season opener.

This delay is a blow to Tigers coach Benji Marshall, who had hoped to unveil the new duo in their first game together. While Koroisau was a standout player for the Tigers last season, his absence—even for a single match—will be felt. Adding to the difficulties, Luai chose to represent Samoa in their tour of England, missing the start of pre-season training with the Tigers. Fans had hoped Luai would follow in the footsteps of several Penrith teammates who opted to rest after a tough season.

Despite this, Luai explained his decision was driven by his pride in representing Samoa, saying he couldn’t turn down the opportunity. The decision delays his integration with the Tigers, especially as anticipation grows for him to join forces with young star Lachlan Galvin and Koroisau.

Meanwhile, Fiji’s loss in the Pacific Bowl was a surprising upset, with PNG, led by former NRL players, dominating the game. Koroisau’s ability to serve his suspension early now rests on Fiji’s performance in their remaining matches.
