According to Michael Gannon, the Rangers would be taking a significant risk if they signed Ryan Kent as a free agent.

After ending his contract at Fenerbahce by mutual consent last week, Kent has been linked to an unexpected return to Ibrox [Scottish Sun].

Though Gannon believes the Gers should think about adding a new left winger in January, the writer cautioned the team not to recruit Kent again at a salary of more than £20,000 a week.

“[Philippe Clement] needs to determine how much money he has to spend and where he wants to spend it,” Gannon stated in his Sunday Mail column on October 20, page 58.

The Belgian still has little muscle in the middle of the park, but he will need to work on his wide-left position.

Due to his injuries, Oscar Cortes is still unknown, and Rabbi Matondo is still a perplexing riddle.

However, after more than two seasons of hardly kicking a ball, Rangers paying up more than £20,000 a week on Kent seems like a bet they can’t really afford.

“It’s best to leave some memories—both good and bad—in the past.”

Ryan Kent linked with surprise Ibrox return with Rangers

The claim made by Gannon that Kent hasn’t touched a ball in over two seasons is overblown, given that the Englishman played 44 games for Rangers in 2022–2023 before signing a free transfer to Fenerbahce that summer.

Even though the 27-year-old is available for free, the Daily Record journalist is correct when she states that adding him would be a major advantage for Philippe Clement’s team.

Kent’s transfer to Fenerbahce did not go as planned; during the previous season, he played in just 622 minutes across all competitions.

The winger’s only game this season was in the Turkish club’s 4-3 victory over Lugano in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round in July, so his hiring as the new boss ahead of the current campaign did not assist either.

Rangers need to be cautious with every move they make because they are currently six points behind Aberdeen and Celtic, even though they still have a game to play. Signing Kent could be a mistake.

Similar to Gannon, Mark Guidi is dubious about Kent joining the Gers and believes the team shouldn’t sacrifice its wage structure to get him back to Ibrox.
