James Tavernier received a new message from Calvin Bassey following Rangers’ Europa League victory over FCSB at Ibrox.
With goals from Tom Lawrence and teenage attacker Hamza Igamane, as well as a brace from Vaclav Cerny, Philippe Clement’s team easily defeated them 4-0 on Thursday, October 24.
Even though Tavernier has received a lot of flak this season, the Gers captain put on a far better show at Ibrox, and Bassey, a former Light Blues teammate, was quick to respond to his performance.
On Friday, October 25, Bassey commented on Tavernier’s Instagram image with the words “Skipp dog” and a single heart emoji.
What has happened to Rangers captain James Tavernier at Ibrox?
Everyone on this Rangers team is subject to criticism, and Tavernier has received a lot of well-founded criticism this season. However, the Light Blues captain performed far better on Thursday night.
The Englishman is a natural at these kinds of matches. He has a lot of time with the ball and room to move forward without having to worry about playing defence, especially one-on-one.
The Gers captain still has a lot to give on the European front, especially when facing less formidable opponents. But that doesn’t mean he should start every game because it’s obvious he can’t hold the greatest forwards in the Premiership or Europe.
Depending on the opposition, Clement should now start resting and rotating his right back. At this point in his career, he cannot expect Tavernier to start every game and give his best effort.
Since leaving Ibrox two years ago, Bassey has featured in 37 Premier League games for two separate clubs. Tavernier had a weak defence when he left Glasgow, and not much has improved since.
