The ARL Commission (ARLC) is currently in talks with the Western Australia (WA) government about forming its own Perth-based Bears team, following its recent rejection of a private proposal from the Perth Bears consortium. In the coming weeks, the ARLC may present this revamped franchise idea to NRL clubs, aiming to finalize plans for expansion by late next month.
The revised plan proposes a Perth team working in collaboration with the North Sydney Bears, but managed by a new company established by the NRL. The NRL and WA government would appoint the team’s board, focusing on local business leaders and community-based membership.
In addition to the Perth bid, ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys also explored the potential for rugby league expansion in Christchurch, noting the impressive level of support for the sport in the traditionally rugby union-focused region. V’landys observed a vibrant atmosphere during the Kangaroos vs. Kiwis game, signaling potential future opportunities for New Zealand-based teams.
V’landys said the next fortnight is key, as the ARLC prepares to submit a business case to the club advisory group. Depending on club feedback, the NRL could move forward with WA as the 18th team and Papua New Guinea as the 19th, or prioritize PNG first while refining the Perth proposal.
