Sam Walker has indicated he’s nearing a two-year contract extension with the Sydney Roosters, effectively ending speculation about a potential move to the Brisbane Broncos. Walker, originally from Queensland and a childhood Broncos fan, had been considered as a possible successor to Broncos’ No.7 Adam Reynolds. However, Brisbane’s salary cap restrictions—especially with Reece Walsh’s new $5 million deal—limit their options. Furthermore, the recent issues with Ezra Mam, who recently entered rehab following a car accident and is under investigation, may impact Mam’s $4 million contract and possibly open up space for Walker if terminated.
Walker, currently contracted with the Roosters through next season, is free to explore offers from other clubs as of November 1. In a recent interview, he stated that contract talks with the Roosters are progressing, with an announcement expected soon. Walker’s reported $2 million extension would keep him with the Roosters through 2027. Despite a season-ending ACL injury in round 26 and recent shoulder surgery, Walker is optimistic about his recovery and expects to be back for the latter part of the 2025 season. He also praised teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, who departed at the end of the season, and believes players like Lindsey Collins and Spencer Leniu are ready to step up in his absence.
