Nelson Jardim believes that securing a stable position in League Two will allow him to effectively implement his desired style at Newport County AFC. With the FA Cup break approaching, it provides a moment for reflection on the season so far.

Despite predictions of a relegation battle, County has made a solid start, accumulating 19 points from 14 matches, averaging 1.36 points per game, compared to last season’s 55 points (1.20 average) under Graham Coughlan, which included a challenging eight-match losing streak.

At this point last season, County had only 15 points, and injuries had begun to impact the squad, leading to a challenging period for the previous manager. Jardim expressed the need for his players’ support, emphasizing the importance of unity and character within the team. Following a tough defeat, the players responded well, which resulted in a successful FA Cup run and a push for play-off contention.

In the summer, club owner Huw Jenkins appointed Jardim to lead a squad he had helped assemble. Jardim aims to shift the team’s style towards a possession-based approach reminiscent of “the Swansea way,” which proved effective in Jenkins’ previous experience.

Though it’s early in Jardim’s tenure, there hasn’t been a significant transformation at Rodney Parade yet. His immediate goal is to foster team cohesion while securing points to avoid a relegation struggle. Currently, County holds a decent win-draw-loss record and hopes that teams like Morecambe and Carlisle continue to face challenges.

However, the statistics indicate there’s still much work to be done regarding style. County ranks 19th in possession, averaging 44.9%, and has only outperformed opponents in possession on two occasions. They are also low in accurate passes and touches in the opposition box, highlighting the need for improvement.

The team is working to adapt to a more expansive play style, especially after losing key player Will Evans to Mansfield, which affected their ability to play long balls effectively. Jardim acknowledges the process will take time, especially with a new squad, but emphasizes that comfort in performance comes from accumulating points.

He believes that once they have a solid points tally, the confidence of both young and experienced players will shine through, showcasing the team’s full potential.

County aims to enhance their performance statistics and make their play more appealing while distancing themselves from the relegation zone.
