Plenty of Barcelona academy graduates have been given the ‘next Lionel Messi’ tag, but Giovani dos Santos had a fair shout in 2006.
After an outstanding junior career, the Mexican, who came to Catalunya at the age of 12, made his Champions League debut at the age of 17, scoring a goal against Aarhus to cap off the debut.
Unfortunately, it was as good as it got for Dos Santos. Before leaving for Tottenham in 2008 in a £5 million transfer, he played in the first team for just one season.
He was sent on loan to Ipswich, Galatasaray, and Racing Santander before returning to Spain permanently since he was unable to make an impression even in north London.
Before retiring in 2021, he returned to America and played for the LA Galaxy after having his greatest season at Villarreal in 2013–14.
According to Claro Sports, the 35-year-old is currently making between £300,000 and £400,000 annually in the petrochemical sector, which is equal to 10 million Mexican pesos.
The former winger is currently a partner with Procura Mexico, a business that is associated with Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), a petrochemical conglomerate.
As if his post-playing career wasn’t enough wealthy, he is rumoured to be involved in the luxury vehicle industry, which is booming in Mexico and brings in even more money.
According to some, Dos Santos never truly retired from football; his final game was in 2021 with Club America, his sole Mexican team.
