Guglielmo Vicario fractured his ankle over the weekend, thus Tottenham might need a new goalie.
As the north London powerhouses look to replace Guglielmo Vicario, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may try to sign Burnley star James Trafford or Sunderland star Anthony Patterson in January. After sustaining a broken ankle during his team’s 4-0 thumping of Manchester City on Saturday, the Spurs custodian will be out for months.
Vicario received medical attention 30 minutes into the match at Etihad Stadium, but he continued to play the whole time.
Fraser Forster is expected to replace him after he underwent ankle surgery and will need to go through a rehabilitation period until he is well enough to rejoin the team.
Tottenham is reportedly thinking about entering the transfer market in January to acquire a new custodian, according to talkSPORT. According to the publication, Patterson is being considered by several top-flight clubs, and Trafford is eager to return to the Premier League after being demoted with Burnley the previous season.
“I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team,” Vicario, 28, said on Instagram following his surgery on Monday to provide supporters with an update on his health.
Regretfully, this one could not be avoided. I required surgery. I regret that I won’t be able to assist the team for some time.
Many thanks to the personnel and the doctors. The procedure went smoothly, and I’ll be training hard starting tomorrow to return stronger, more fit, and prepared to give it my all for you once more. I appreciate all of the affection from the Spurs supporters. I’ll see you on the pitch soon.
Tottenham also confirmed in a statement that Guglielmo Vicario had surgery today to treat a fractured right ankle.
“Our medical staff will evaluate him to decide when he is ready to resume training.”
After helping the England Under-21s win the European Championship in 2023, Trafford was promoted to Burnley’s first-choice keeper under Vincent Kompany last season. However, he lost his spot to Arijanet Muric near the conclusion of the season.
The 22-year-old has returned to the starting lineup this season and has made 15 appearances in the Championship, keeping nine clean sheets.
After replacing Ron-Thorben Hoffmann during his team’s previous League One season, Patterson has been Sunderland’s first-choice keeper for the past two and a half seasons.
Due to his outstanding achievements in the Championship, the 24-year-old, who has made 135 appearances for the north east powerhouses, was linked to a move to Arsenal and Liverpool in the spring.
