Following Dylan Brown’s unexpected departure from the Parramatta Eels, Dragons newcomer Clint Gutherson has made a playful jab at his former teammate.

The 30-year-old has signed a three-year contract with St George Illawarra, bringing his skills to Wollongong after playing in blue and gold for nine seasons.

Brown’s remarks this week demonstrate how Gutherson led the team for several years, establishing standards at Parramatta and making a significant impact on the team.

The top five-eighth acknowledged that he would struggle both on and off the pitch without Gutherson, calling him the “heartbeat” of the Eels team.

Although Gutherson was obviously shocked by the remarks, he did not pass up the chance to make fun of the Kiwi international.

“Dylan probably doesn’t even remember what I look like,” he stated.

“But really, knowing that you left something there is really unique. You always want to leave the club and a jersey in a better place, and if I’ve done that, I’ve done my job. In any case, they’re a fantastic club.

“They’re going to be going forward as well and I’m here now, they’re there, so this is where we stand and I’m looking forward.”

The Red V were selected to play Parramatta in round five of the following season, so Gutherson won’t have to wait long to play his former teammates.

The fullback acknowledges it will be an odd match, but he already has one eye on it.

“A lot of my close mates are still there – you just want to get one up on them,” he stated.

“You want to play in those big games and take a look at them, but they won’t be any different.

The sport of rugby league is peculiar. Not just if you’re switching clubs, but you also need to understand how to move on week to week and rather swiftly.

“I think the first day was a little strange because I was just feeling my way around, figuring out where to go, where to stroll, and all that.

“They had a significant role in my life, but now I’m here. I’m putting all of my attention into this club right now, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.”
