Following a terrible year in rugby league limbo, Ronald Volkman is ready to start playing for Parramatta again.
Nearly a year after his infamously disastrous move to St George Illawarra, the former Warriors playmaker has agreed to a one-year contract with the Eels.
Volkman will give new coach Jason Ryles depth alongside fellow recruit Dean Hawkins, but he won’t rush either Dylan Brown or Mitchell Moses, the starting halves, into the squad for the first round.
Ryan Matterson was forced to play in the halves when both Moses and Brown were absent in mid-2023, and the Eels have been plagued by their lack of depth in the halves in recent seasons.
Volkman has started working out at the Eels’ headquarters in Kellyville.
Before a medical examination indicated a major shoulder injury that would keep him out for the season, the Dragons announced in January that they had signed Volkman, who is 22.
The Dragons subsequently cut Volkman because he couldn’t get a contract elsewhere and his contract wasn’t officially documented with the NRL.
The Dragons accepted the $40,000 suspended fine they received in September for the incident.

Since then, Volkman has had shoulder surgery, and he was said to be joining Manly in 2025.
Volkman, a Samoan representative, last participated in a rugby league match at the Pacific Championships in October 2023.
He has participated in five NRL games since making his debut in 2022 and was a part of the Warriors team that advanced to the NSW Cup preliminary final that season.
