Papua New Guinea international Dan Russell has shared how influential Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess was in his decision to join the club, revealing that Burgess’ involvement was pivotal. Russell, a 29-year-old Queensland native, has signed a two-year deal with Warrington starting in 2025.

The experienced forward is one of the marquee arrivals at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, joining alongside London Broncos half-back Oli Leyland and promising talent Alfie Johnson, who has been part of Leeds Rhinos’ youth setup. Russell brings with him a solid rugby league pedigree, boasting eight NRL appearances for the St. George Illawarra Dragons and 11 international caps for Papua New Guinea, reflecting his heritage.

This marks Russell’s first foray into the Super League, a significant move for him and his young family as they relocate from Australia. Speaking with media, including LoveRugbyLeague, Russell expressed confidence in his decision, highlighting how Burgess’ reputation and coaching style heavily influenced his choice.

Burgess, a celebrated figure in rugby league, transitioned to the NRL during his playing career and became one of its most iconic forwards, with nearly 200 appearances for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Russell acknowledged Burgess’ impact, stating, “That made the decision. I’m 29 now, and I believe my best rugby is still ahead of me. Watching Sam play and seeing the team’s performance this year under his leadership was incredibly inspiring. I didn’t want to miss the chance to work with him. I truly believe he can help take my game to the next level.”

Russell brings considerable experience to Warrington, having played over 100 games in Australia’s second-tier competitions, including the New South Wales Cup and Queensland Cup. He has represented teams such as the Souths Logan Magpies, Mackay Cutters, Brisbane Tigers, and St. George Illawarra Dragons’ reserve squad, scoring 23 tries across these competitions.

Reflecting on his career so far and his new journey, Russell said, “I’ve been part of several NRL clubs, and working with Sam feels like the perfect culmination of my experiences. I’m in the best physical condition I’ve ever been in, although I’ll refine my fitness during pre-season. At this stage in my career, the timing of this move couldn’t be better. I’m confident it will help me grow as a player and reach my full potential.
