As Tottenham defended a Nottingham Forest corner, Keith Hackett blasted the “awful” shirt pulling in the penalty box.
Anthony Elanga’s goal in the first half of Thursday’s (December 26) 1-0 loss to Spurs put additional pressure on Ange Postecoglou.
Craig Pawson could have handled a situation in the first half more skillfully, according to former FIFA referee Hackett.
“The wrestling inside the penalty area at a Forest corner kick was appalling,” he stated in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News.
Before indicating that the corner kick should be taken, referee Pawson speaks with the players. Two players end up on the ground after yet another holding and tugging match before the kick is taken.
Referees should simply declare a corner, signal for the kick to be taken, and then use a penalty kick or free kick to punish any holding offenses.
Tottenham fall to defeat against Nottingham Forest
Tottenham has struggled with corner defense under Postecoglou, and this was evident against Forest as well.
Spurs were just not good enough against their high-flying opponents, whether they were attacking or defending.
The Lilywhites, who are now in 11th position in the Premier League’s bottom half, have now lost four of their last six games.
Needless to say, that is unacceptable, and if the run goes on for a long time, Postecoglou might lose his job.
