According to Gary Lineker, Everton’s lack of skill in the final third would put them in “deep trouble” if it weren’t for Jordan Pickford.
Lineker acknowledged on Match of the Day (4 January) that his old team was “hard to watch” during their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth, where they were held scoreless for the eighth time in their previous ten games.
With little going at the other end and Pickford making a number of saves to keep the Toffees in the game at 0-0, Lineker offered his candid opinion on their chances without the England number one.
“Everton though, boy,” he said. They haven’t scored in eight of their last ten games, and to be completely honest, they would be in serious trouble if it weren’t for Jordan Pickford.
“I really do love Everton, but they’re really difficult to watch right now.”
Gary Lineker spot on with ‘hard to watch’ Everton assessment
Given that they have lost eight of their previous ten games, it should come as no surprise that the Toffees are currently the second-lowest scoring team in the Premier League, trailing only a bottom-place Southampton team.
This includes going without a goal in four of their previous five games since defeating fellow struggling team Wolves 4-0 at Goodison Park, a performance that seems increasingly unusual every week.
Sean Dyche’s wager on Armando Broja to start ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin didn’t pay off, as the Albanian was substituted out due to injury only three minutes into the south coast games.
With only two goals this season, Calvert-Lewin’s chances of making a quick return to the Blues’ lineup for their upcoming league game on January 15 are about as bright as his contractual situation.
Although much-needed attacking reinforcements may be brought in during this month’s transfer window, it is obvious that a complete overhaul is long overdue given how badly the Blues have performed in front of goal.
