David Moyes is a “special” appointment for Everton, according to Liverpool manager Arne Slot. After Sean Dyche was fired by The Friedkin Group on Thursday, January 9, the 61-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to return to Goodison Park on Saturday, January 11.

Before the Reds’ 4-0 FA Cup victory over Accrington Stanley, Slot discussed the events at Stanley Park live on ITV Sport (11 January, 11:41 am). Although the Dutchman thinks Dyche’s dismissal is a “pity,” he acknowledged that the return of Moyes will thrill the Everton supporters. He stated: “It’s always special when David Moyes comes in because of what he did at Everton, but overall, he was successful at West Ham, winning the Conference League with John Heitinga, who is currently my assistant. “It’s nice to have him back, but it’s always unfortunate when someone who did a great job, in my opinion, is no longer employed.”

David Moyes can be special at Everton

A lot has changed at Goodison Park since Moyes’ last spell at Everton.

Before the Blues boss left to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013, his side had finished in the top half of the Premier League in nine of the 11 seasons he was in charge – they have only managed four top-half finishes since.

Furthermore, the Toffees qualified regularly for the Europa League under Moyes and have not featured in European competition since the 2017/18 campaign
Former players, commentators, and supporters have all responded favorably to his homecoming, but it doesn’t lessen the enormous task that lies ahead on Merseyside.
The supporters will see Moyes in the Goodison Park dugout for the first time upon his return for the Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday (15 January).

Everton surrendered a two-goal lead in the reverse fixture at Villa Park earlier this season in the 3-2 loss and while the players will be eager to impress Moyes and avenge the defeat, winning will be no easy feat.

With only one point separating the Blues from 18th-place Ipswich Town, it is imperative that Moyes begins his second spell on Merseyside in winning fashion.
