According to Caught Offside, Tottenham Hotspur have identified Chelsea star Tosin Adarabioyo as a surprise target to strengthen their defence during the winter transfer window.
Tottenham have had a disastrous Premier League season, finishing 15th in the standings with just one point from their last six games. The club’s defensive record has been poor in the absence of several injured centre-backs, and manager Ange Postecoglou may seek reinforcement before the transfer deadline.
According to Caught Offside, Spurs are looking at different options to bolster their backline, and Adarabioyo has emerged as a surprise winter target for them. Chelsea only signed the Englishman on a free transfer last summer, but the London heavyweights may be willing to let him go if a suitable bid comes in.
Possible deal
Spurs have been hindered by several of defensive ailments this year. All four of their centre-backs, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, and Ben Davies, were injured at once.
Dragusin and Davies have returned to first-team action, while Postecoglou says Romero and Van de Ven are close to doing the same. Regardless, the manager may seek to increase defensive depth.
Adarabioyo would be an excellent addition for Spurs, given his extensive Premier League experience (88 appearances). He has not established himself as a regular starter at Chelsea and could be open to a new challenge.
Transfermarkt has assessed the 27-year-old at £17 million. The Blues may be willing to authorize his sale for around £25 million. We won’t be surprised if Spurs are willing to pay that much to sign the Manchester City graduate.
Adarabioyo is a solid ball-playing centre-back. He has completed 93% of his passes in the Premier League this season and won 66% of his duels. He has also excelled in ball recovery and clearing his lines.
The former Fulham player would be an excellent prospect to compete for a starting berth at Tottenham. Following multiple injuries, Postecoglou may need to exercise caution when dealing with Romero and Van de Ven. Adarabioyo could receive his fair share of starts.
