Tottenham Hotspur were among the world’s most active clubs on transfer deadline day.
North Londoners entered the market in need of reinforcements in several sectors. Ange Postecoglou intended to add a new goalie, a couple of defenders, and an attacker.
Apart from the signing of Antonin Kinsky, nothing happened in the first 32 days of the window, but Spurs were able to bring in two new players in the last two days.
Tottenham did miss out on the signing of one player, despite making a bid for him.
Jamie O’Hara reacts to Tottenham’s transfers and Marc Guehi bid
Tottenham closed the winter transfer window with three new arrivals.
Kinsky was the first, and he was called in to take over for Guglielmo Vicario. The 21-year-old has excelled since joining Spurs.
Kevin Danso was the second to arrive, and his presence is critical for Tottenham since Radu Dragusin’s ACL injury was confirmed.
Mathys Tel was the final and most exciting of them all, and Spurs fans are eager to see him in action in the coming days.
On transfer deadline day, Tottenham announced that they had bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. That was declined, but Jamie O’Hara finds it difficult to accept that an offer was made at all.
In an interview with talkSPORT, O’Hara stated, “Here’s my viewpoint on the Spurs transfers. We don’t know if Mathys Tel is a good player; he was the reserve at Bayern Munich.
“We bought Danso from Wolves because Dragusin is out until the end of the season, so we needed a centre-half. Do I know anything about him? No. I would be lying if I said I knew anything about him. Is he a top player? We do not know. Again, you are purchasing the potential to be a good player.
“Apparently, they made a bid for Guehi, which is a crock of nonsense. I assure it never happened.
“To say he (Daniel Levy) has been very active in the last few days of the transfer window – well, what about the last 28 days, when Spurs have been in an injury crisis and he hasn’t signed anyone. And we’ve just seen the team fall lower down the standings.
“I believe we are partially covering up the Mathy Tel signing. We don’t know if he will be successful.”
The big mistake Tottenham made in Marc Guehi pursuit
Guehi has been a superb Premier League defender for Crystal Palace in recent years.
The Englishman has also built a name for himself on the international stage, and he is almost certainly destined to join a larger club in the future.
Tottenham were right to try; he would have been an excellent addition. However, Spurs waited until the last few days of the transfer window to make a move for Guehi. Palace was never going to let him leave that late.
If Daniel Levy had shown more effort and gone all out for Guehi in the first week of the window, the Eagles might have consented to let him go for the proper price, given that he has fewer than 18 months left on his contract.
Unfortunately for Spurs, it has subsequently been reported that Guehi is more likely to join Chelsea than Tottenham this summer.
