The thought of Newcastle United leaving St James’ Park is becoming more and more serious.

Stadium plans have been a major topic of discussion at Newcastle United since the club’s ownership shift, but they have increased during the last year.
The prospect of a completely new stadium has also grown increasingly realistic. Leaving St James’ Park had never seemed conceivable, but that began to alter after Amanda Staveley departed Newcastle United.

Newcastle is now considering building a new stadium that may cost up to £1.2 billion. That may become the preferred choice, but the ultimate decision will be decided by PIF.

How much expanding St James’ Park will cost Newcastle United

However, this is not the only option available. The Magpies could potentially choose to expand St James’ Park, avoiding a sad farewell to such a famous facility.

That would undoubtedly be cheaper.

According to the Telegraph, expanding and enhancing St James’ Park’s capacity would cost between £600 million and £800 million.

There have been concerns that the PIF may not give funding for a new stadium, therefore spending a smaller sum in a St James’ Park expansion may be more attractive. However, that is only guesswork.

How long expanding St James’ Park will take

Increasing the capacity of St James’ Park would be less expensive and more efficient.

According to the Telegraph, a St James’ Park expansion might be completed within five years.

Furthermore, the Telegraph reports that Newcastle United will be permitted to continue playing at home while the renovation is done.

That is also an important consideration, given there has been talk that Newcastle will play at the Stadium of Light. In reality, that was never going to happen, but it demonstrated how tough it would be for the Magpies to find a temporary home.
