Joelinton is in danger of receiving a two-match suspension for Newcastle United in the Premier League, but a recent injury may spare him.
The Brazilian has already had nine Premier League bookings this season, but he suffered a knee injury following his booking during the team’s most recent 2-1 loss to Fulham at St. James’ Park. After receiving five bookings in Newcastle’s first 19 Premier League games, Joelinton has already served a one-match suspension and will not play in December’s trip to Ipswich Town.
The aggressive midfielder must now avoid receiving a card for Newcastle for the next eight Premier League games or face a two-match suspension after receiving four more since his return from suspension. He has missed Newcastle’s past two cup games due to a recent injury, and he is probably going to be out for Saturday’s trip to Manchester City as well as the forthcoming games against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.
It’s a setback for Newcastle, especially if Joelinton is given a yellow card and misses two more games. However, as he will only need to play five games without receiving a booking by the time he returns, his chances of getting suspended have decreased from very definite to just likely.
Joelinton has previously served a suspension of this kind; in the 2022–2023 season, he missed two games after receiving ten bookings.
What Premier League rules say about bookings
According to Premier League regulations, a player faces a two-match suspension if they receive ten bookings in the first 32 Premier League games.
No other Newcastle players are now in grave danger, but Joelinton is on the verge of being banned. Sandro Tonali and Fabian Schar have five bookings each, while Dan Burn has seven but is also sidelined due to injury.
To be banned, Tonali would need to receive five further bookings in Newcastle’s next eight games. While Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff, Jacob Murphy, Nick Pope, and Joe Willock have two bookings each, Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Hall have three.
Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier, Alexander Isak, and Sven Botman each have one yellow card.
Any player who receives 15 bookings during the season is suspended for three games after the 10-to-32 game threshold is reached. No player has received that many warnings in a single Premier League season to date.
Do bookings & bans impact the cup competitions?
For those panicking about the FA Cup fifth round against Brighton & Hove Albion or the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16 – don’t!
Booking suspensions are competition-specific, meaning a suspension picked up as a result of accumulating yellow cards in the Premier League is served only in the Premier League while a suspension picked up in the cup competitions is served in that specific competition.
Still, the rules are different for red cards, which do transcend competitions. Newcastle found that out when they reached the Carabao Cup final in 2023 when Bruno Guimaraes was sent off in the semi-final second leg against Southampton and missed the three following matches for Newcastle which all happened to be in the Premier League before being back available for the final. But Nick Pope wasn’t so fortunate after his sending-off in the Premier League against Liverpool led to him missing the final at Wembley Stadium as Newcastle lost 2-0 to Manchester United
