St George Illawarra are hoping to receive crucial clarity on Francis Molo’s situation in the coming days, as his unresolved contract status continues to stand in the way of a potential move for Wests Tigers prop David Klemmer.

Molo, a former Queensland State of Origin representative, remains on sick leave after walking away from the club during the summer. The 30-year-old front-rower has been granted leave on mental health grounds and has been given permission to explore opportunities with rival clubs. However, with two years left on his current contract, his future remains uncertain.

The Dragons’ management, including head coach Shane Flanagan, recently held discussions with the NRL seeking clarity on how Molo’s situation affects their roster. While they await a response, there is optimism that an update could arrive before the end of the week—potentially before their opening-round clash with Canterbury on March 8.

St George Illawarra’s 30-man squad is currently full, meaning they must free up a spot before making any signings. Should Molo depart, the Dragons have their sights set on Klemmer, who has emerged as a prime target.

Klemmer, a veteran of 14 State of Origin appearances and six Tests for Australia, has one year remaining on his contract with the Tigers, with a mutual option to extend into 2026 if he meets a certain number of appearances this season. Despite joining the Tigers as a marquee recruit from Newcastle in 2023, the club has since strengthened its forward pack with additions such as Royce Hunt, Fonua Pole, and Terrell May.

The 31-year-old was a late omission from the Tigers’ pre-season fixture against Canterbury last week and has not been named to face Parramatta this Friday. However, sources within the Tigers camp insist his absence is purely due to his experience, rather than any pressing selection concerns.

For the Dragons, Klemmer’s potential arrival would provide much-needed size and leadership in the middle of the park. His addition would further strengthen Flanagan’s squad, which has already been bolstered by the signings of Valentine Holmes, Clint Gutherson, and Damien Cook ahead of the 2025 season.

As the countdown to Round 1 continues, all eyes will be on the Dragons’ next move, with Molo’s future holding the key to any further squad adjustments.
