Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has urged the club to act swiftly in securing the future of rising star Djeidi Gassama, with reports suggesting his value could soar to £10 million.
The 21-year-old winger, who joined Wednesday from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, has grown into a crucial player for the Owls this season. After a challenging debut campaign at Hillsborough, where he managed four goals and three assists in 37 appearances, Gassama has stepped up significantly this term. With five goals and an assist in 32 matches so far, he has played a vital role in Wednesday’s push for a play-off spot.
Palmer, speaking exclusively to Football League World, emphasized Gassama’s impact and the importance of securing his long-term future.
“One of the players who has been instrumental in Wednesday’s form is Djeidi Gassama. He has been very influential for Sheffield Wednesday, having joined them from Paris Saint-Germain last summer,” Palmer said.
“His decision-making is getting better, his ability to pick a pass has improved, and he has the quality to strike from distance. He has age on his side and will only continue to grow, but with his contract expiring in the summer of 2026, I think Sheffield Wednesday need to get him tied down pretty quickly.”
Palmer also warned that Gassama’s growing reputation will inevitably attract interest from other clubs. With his contract running down, Wednesday risk losing him for a cut-price fee or even for free further down the line. Given owner Dejphon Chansiri’s reluctance to offer heavily financed long-term deals, the club faces a difficult decision in the coming months.
Despite financial constraints, Wednesday will be eager to keep hold of their young star. His partnership with experienced players like Michael Smith, Josh Windass, and Barry Bannan has been pivotal, and losing him could be a major blow to their long-term ambitions.
With the summer transfer window approaching, the Owls must decide whether to cash in or secure a new deal for one of their most promising talents. If Palmer’s advice is heeded, Wednesday fans could see Gassama remain at Hillsborough, continuing to light up the pitch with his electrifying performances.
