High Performance Manager Mat Inness provides an update on West Coast’s injured players

In mixed news, West Coast Eagles midfielder Campbell Chesser is expected to miss some time, while fellow mid Tom Gross hopes to return to main training on Wednesday after a calf injury.

Chesser underwent ankle surgery on Monday with the goal of increasing his playing time in 2025.

“Over the last week or so, Campbell has had some ankle issues as a result of a previous ankle injury,” High Performance Manager Mat Inness told westcoasteagles.com.au.

“We proactively intervened with some surgery to give him the best chance of playing as much football as possible later this season.”

After missing some time on the track last week, promising youngster Gross is set to return to major training with the group on Wednesday.

“Tom had some calf tightness last week,” Inness explained.

“We’ve managed his load this week and expect him to fully train tomorrow.”

Defender Harry Barnett recently sustained an eye issue that limited his training time, but he will return to the track this week.

“Harry Barnett got a football to the eye a couple of weeks ago,” Inness recalled.

“He hasn’t been playing since he hasn’t participated in contact exercises for the past few weeks.

“He’s got the all-clear from the specialist to start integrating back into full contact now so he’s good to go.”

Matt Flynn was taken out of the match-simulation against Richmond last week after getting a back injury.

“Flynny’ got a knock to his back against Richmond, so we took him out of that game,” Inness informed the crowd.

“He had some soreness for the next week but again, we’ll see him hopefully getting the contact tick-off tomorrow to be available to play later this week.”

Coen Livingstone, an emerging ruck, represented the Indigenous All Stars earlier this month, but suffered a hit to the abdomen mid-game, necessitating a post-game recovery.

“Coen got a knock to the ribs in the Indigenous All Stars game,” he stated.

“He presented with it after the game and was unaware of it throughout the game, but he must complete training tomorrow.

“He will be modified later this week, but we don’t see any long-term issues.”

Positive news: top midfielder Elliot Yeo is making good progress in his recovery from ankle syndesmosis surgery last month.

“Elliott is out of the boot and starting to progress to AlterG running later this week and is going really well,” Inness told the press.
