Lachlan Keeffe, a former Collingwood Magpie and current GWS Giants veteran, has chosen the three most difficult opponents he has faced on the field in his AFL career.
Keeffe, who debuted in 2011, will play his 15th season in 2025 and has faced some of the competition’s finest players while at the Collingwood Magpies (2008-17) and GWS Giants (2018-).
He was drafted at No.69 in the 2009 Rookie Draft and has appeared in 116 matches as either a key defender or a key forward, and he aims to improve to that total this season.
When asked by Zero Hanger which players were the toughest he has ever faced on the AFL field, Keeffe responded with three men from quite different careers.
“I’ve been lucky enough to play for a while. “I’d say the most difficult opponent would probably be Nick Riewoldt,” Keeffe told Zero Hanger.
“He’s a fantastic athlete with tremendous passion and desire. He just wills himself to win the contest and the game, which is one of the reasons he’s such a terrific captain, but he was really difficult to defend.
“He basically had an amazing motor and wanted to play. Obviously, men like Buddy [Lance Franklin]. Buddy was a superstar, and I’d never seen anyone like him.
“I haven’t seen another Lance Franklin in my lifetime. He’s the best player I’ve ever played with because he can kick from anywhere, and you had to be ready all the time.
“Even then, you have no control over how he feels.
“The other person who gave me some problems was Kurt Tippett, who was a large guy and moved very effectively.
“I played on him a few times, and he was just a big guy, good hands and had that presence.”
